Farfaria: Children's Storybook App
From Sept 2014 - Sept 2015, I was the Product Experience Manager of Farfaria, a children’s storybook app downloaded by millions. An average subscriber read 25 books per week, which is 5x the national average.
AB Test Example
First time users that complete a book are much more likely to open the app a second time.
The story map is the gateway to select a book, yet we noticed a fair amount of abandonment on this screen.
My Hypothesis: users do not know they can interact with the map. Test group will receive a hint to tap on the map.
Result: Test group's 1st book complete event rate was 22% higher than control group.
Optimized Sharing
I optimized the share flow to control for future experiments.
Reading Socially
To increase growth, I designed a flow that allowed users to share books they read, in essence forming a book club. This feature is designed to incentivize word of mouth which is particularly impactful amongst parents.
Magic Sleep by Farfaria:
To drive acquisition and experiment with a new channel, I conceived and designed a free app with the express purpose of increasing downloads.
Bedtime is the time of highest app engagement. We produced Magic Sleep leveraging existing audio assets to read books aloud to kids and give parents a much needed break. This app was produced in a single 3-week sprint. It resulted in a noticeable uptick in downloads.
User research was one of my favorite parts of this job. Here is a field usability test of a Read Along feature. Please be sure the sound is on :)
